Clawface paced back and forth in front of her den under a starless, ink-black sky. It was nearly moonhigh, but the Alpha simply couldn't sleep, and she really wasn't sure why. Frustrated with herself, Clawface sprang up on the Tallrock and sat there firmly, tilting her face up to where the stars would have been if she could see them. For some reason, she had a vague feeling of misfortune, and she didn't know where it was coming from.
Suddenly the bushes at the entrance to the camp rustled. Clawface looked around sharply. Her yellow eyes widened in shock as she watched Night stumble into the clearing and collapse. Blood glistened darkly in the moonlight on her back, neck, and one side, and her breath came out in ragged gasps.
Clawface dropped from the Tallrock and leapt to the Beta's side. "Night!" She yowled.
The call vibrated around the clearing and echoed throughout the territory, rousing wolves from their slumber. Matias, Kisharu, and Frost stumbled out of their dens, looking confused, followed by a few others.
Matias was the first to snap out of the daze of his recently disturbed sleep. "Great Starpack!!!" He howled. "What's going on?!"
Mystic, who happened to be a light sleeper, emerged from her den, followed by what appeared to be a sleepwalking Bud. The Medic knelt next to Night, sniffing her furiously.
Night coughed feebly. "Leave me...." she whispered. Under the gazes of the wolves around her, the black wolf took a deep breath, shuddered, and was still.
Mystic waited for a moment.
Clawface also waited.
The clearing was enveloped in a deep, forbidding silence.
After a while, one of the pups, Olive, spoke up in a tiny, nervous voice. "Is she...dead?"
Mystic didn't respond at first. She stared off into oblivion past the limp, apparently lifeless form of Night. After a while, she said "Yes."
Clawface used as much energy as she could to keep herself from hanging her head. Fatigue washed over her in an almost overwhelming state, and she hoped, wished desperately, to the bottom of her heart, that this was only a nightmare, and nothing more. But her heart told her otherwise.
Night was dead.
~~~
The next morning, wolves were awakened by the sunlight filtering in through their dens, but more so by the news that was quickly passed. The Beta was dead.
The members of the pack entered the clearing from their sleeping quarters to see a solitary, lone figure sitting next to the heap of black fur that was Night. Clawface's eyes were closed and she was completely motionless, and a few wondered if she was asleep, but she suddenly opened her eyes and leaped up to the Tallrock. A visible weight pulled at her paws, and the usual energy that flowed through her was absent.
"Let all those old enough to catch their own prey, join beneath the Tallrock for a pack meeting."
The wolves did as the rather flat call commanded, giving questioning and rather horrified glances at each other.
Clawface lifted her head slightly. "On the moonhigh of the last night, our Beta died."
This was met with silence.
"The cause of her death is unknown. She could not have been saved. She left these hunting grounds moments after falling to them for the last time."
A few murmurs went up, but were silenced quickly as Clawface cast an uncharictaristically hollow gaze over them.
"She runs with Starpack now. I have sat vigil with her, and Song will bury her when this meeting comes to a close." Clawface raised her voice slightly. "May Night approve of the choices we make as a pack in the future. I say these words before her body and Starpack, in hopes that they approve of this descision. Romeo has advanced in rank and now will take Night's place as Beta. Sky will become the new Gamma of Moonpack. Meeting dismissed."
Song proceeded to, on her own, carry Night's body from the camp to bury it. Clawface perched on the Tallrock, watching after them.
((Yes. Hawkface and Night are gone. I'm really not sure why, but Hawkface left a comment last night that said she had to leave, and gave a breif IC of what became of Night. We'll miss you, Hawkface.))
(Moon and Swirly Girl here)
ReplyDeleteMystic stared after Song, feeling desperation build up inside her. She had been unable to save her Beta. What kind of a Medic was she?
(Could you please delete or put up for roleplaying Ginger and Dawn? I don't really have plans for them anymore...)
ReplyDeleteRomeo looked up at Clawface's outline, siloutted in the moonlight. Am I ready for this? he thought, then shook his head. He would conquer his feelings of doubt.
Bud dipped her head and nodded to Romeo "Best of luck!" she called to him before disappearing into her den.
ReplyDeleteRouge growled a deep rumbling noise, but otherwise didn't move or do anything during the meeting. Without a glance at anyone he stole out of the entrance and into the night.
Kisharu looked once at the dead body of Night as Song pulled it along with her. Her face crumpled into a frown as her gaze returned to the new Beta, Romeo. For some reason she didn't like him, he didn't seem right. He was a bit secretive, but she couldn't complain, he was the Beta now.
Puff shrugged off the death of the Beta easily, she didn't seem to hold onto emotions for long. With quick pawsteps she made her way to the fresh-kill pile.
(OOoooOO! I've forgotten you haven't seen much of Puff here! Your gonna LOVE her!)
Cloud looked on, her already dimpled face, scrunching in even more. "Oh dear" she whimpered.
Jasper shrugged, as long as he was fed he didn't really care who died and who didn't and who was sprouting wings or whatever.
(Also,what about Moonshine??)
((Sure Skyheart, I'll put them up for RPing.
ReplyDeleteMm, forgot about Moonshine, thanks for reminding me, Willowfeather. XD Here's her perspective on the occurance.))
Moonshine sat in the entrance to the Hunter's den. The mark on her forehead that usually glowed had dulled considerably. She sighed and shook her head.
"So much sorrow....so much pain this world feels...."
The black wolf had known it would happen. She as well as all of Starpack had known. Moonshine knew that Echo had warned Night in a dream. Night hadn't listened, and this was what happened.
Moonshine shook her head. She couldn't have revealed the secrets of Starpack as plainly as she would have liked, even if Night's destiny had been alterable.
ReplyDeleteShear grumbled and thought about heading after Rouge, the big bad wolves gotta stick together right?
Whoever he thought better of it, two of the biggest wolves walking around in the night have the Beta died was not really the best idea.
Olive shivered against Hunter, while Mallorie snuggled into Thistles fur.
Hunter raised his head stubbornly and met the eye of the new Beta. "He'd better watch his back!" he growled to Alaska and Olive.
"I'm sure you'll have him quaking in fear" Alaska laughed at the braveness in his son's voice.
"L-l-le-lets get back inside!" Mallorie chirped, wide-eyed.
"Okay, back in everyone!" Alaska prodded the pups into the small opening before squeezing in herself.
(BTW, I'm going to be going away to camp from July 26th-August 8th. Just to let you know so you don't think I'm MIA. Could you do something with Romeo twisting/hurting his leg for two weeks? Sorry about this :( It seems like all our Betas have bad luck...)
ReplyDeleteRomeo nodded to the wolves wishing him luck. He knew there were some among the pack who doubted him, or thought that they should have been made Beta instead of him, but he made a silent vow to always put his pack first, secrets or no secrets.
He slipped up to Night's body and looked down with sorrow on the shell of a once-great wolf. He pressed his nose deep in her dark fur and whispered, "I will do my best to take care of the pack that you helped to lead so honorably."
Romeo straightened up and made his way over to Sky, the new Gamma. He offered a toothy grin and a few words of encouragement. "You'll be a great Gamma," he said. "Every wolf in this pack already respects you. I wish I could say the same for myself..."
~Romeo
((Okay, I'll make a note of that and do something with Romeo when your absence rolls around....
ReplyDeleteHuh, you're right....odd, why DO Betas always have bad luck? o.0 ))
(I might be gone for awhile since my internet is being cut tomorrow but I will try to persuade my mom to put it back on and I'll act like the sweet angel I am... jk i am no angel XD)
ReplyDeleteSky dipped his head. Happy to become Gamma but upset by the reason why. He turned to Clawface and Romeo. "Would you like me to take out a patrol?" He asked quietly. "Although we have lost a wolf our pack needs to be safe."
~Sky
She shuddered. Remembering all the wolves she knew who were lost. She smiled knowing Night would be happy in StarPack.
~Frost
((Lol, I don't think any of us are angels. XD Okay, see you soon then, hopefully.))
ReplyDeleteClawface nodded from her perch atop the Tallrock. "Take Flick, Matias, Phantom, and Shasta. See if you can pick up Night's trail and try to give me some clues to determine the cause of her death." The alpha paused. "Be careful."
(WHOOP WHOOP! It's been two whole days and the people haven't gotten my internet cut off yet! XD)
ReplyDelete"Okay." He looked for the wolves Clawface has listed.
~Sky
He pricked his ears when he heard his name but he came running incase he was needed.
~Shasta
((YAAAY! :D ))
